Symptoms of Mold Growth in Your AC

Mold growth is dangerous for your home and your family. Sometimes mold growth is easy to identify because you can see it. But other times, mold can grow in dark, hidden spaces, like the inside of your air conditioner.

When this happens, mold is more difficult to identify. You can keep reading to learn more about some of the signs that can indicate mold growth, even if you don’t see an infestation in obvious places. Then, give our team a call to schedule an air conditioning service in Sarasota to stay ahead of a mold problem before it spreads further around your home.

Musty Odors

If the air coming out of your air conditioner has a musty or damp smell it’s a red flag that could point toward a mold infestation. If your air conditioner does not remove humidity the way it is supposed to, moisture could gather inside of the unit, creating the perfect environment for mold to thrive. There are always mold spores in the air around you, but they can cling to dark, damp surfaces and spread to become an infestation quickly.

Visible Mold on Other Surfaces

Noticing mold anywhere else around your home can mean that it is also in your HVAC system. This is especially true if you notice mold in multiple places around your home. Since your HVAC system distributes air into all of the rooms, there’s a good chance that the mold infestation originated inside of the system or ductwork.

The thing about mold is that it has to be completely eliminated from your home or you will continue to struggle with the problem. This means having a professional wipe down and sanitize any surfaces that have mold growing on them and getting rid of anything that was affected by mold.

Increased Allergy Symptoms

Mold can increase allergy symptoms that you experience. For example, maybe you get seasonal allergies or have known allergies to something like cats or pollen. Mold is something that can trigger allergy symptoms in absolutely anyone because it is so detrimental to your health.

Aside from allergy symptoms, you may also develop a persistent cough that doesn’t go away with treatment. If you continue living alongside the mold infestation, you will never experience relief from your allergy symptoms. If it seems like you are staying sick, or experiencing illness or allergy symptoms persistently, mold may be to blame and you need to get your home and HVAC system inspected.

Headaches and Skin Irritation

Mold can also cause physical problems outside of allergies and illness. You may experience persistent headaches or have dry, itchy skin. Mold can negatively impact you in a variety of ways. You may experience some of all of the symptoms related to a mold infestation. If you don’t find relief with any medication or other solution, it’s time to schedule an in-home assessment.
