Is Your HVAC Unit Over 10 Years Old? Look for These Repairs

Woman-trying-to-find-relief-from-broken-AC

No HVAC system is set to last forever. The average lifespan for HVAC units is 10-15 years. While this changes slightly based on the system brand and climate, it’s a good rule of thumb to follow.

Once your HVAC enters the double digits, problems begin popping up that newer systems don’t face as often. If you need HVAC repair in Sarasota, FL for an HVAC unit that’s ten years or older, these are some repairs you may expect.

Poor Efficiency

This is a little ambiguous since it’s caused by multiple factors. The parts in your air conditioner are simply wearing down over time and don’t provide the same level of efficiency that they once did.

Your AC will lower its efficiency over time, so at the ten-year mark, it’s time to consider an inspection to determine what problems your air conditioner is running into. A professional technician will be able to diagnose any major problems and suggest a solution.

Leaky Ducts

There’s a typical (and wide) range regarding how often you should have your ducts sealed. It’s a case-by-case basis which is why some HVAC specialists recommend 15 years, and some recommend 30 years.

Even small duct leaks can cause big problems for your air conditioner efficiency. Then it has to work harder to cool the home, which produces more wear and tear damages than necessary. Sealed ducts can help your HVAC unit last longer.

Thermostat Malfunctions

Your thermostat is imperative to your air conditioner, but it may not last for nearly as long. Most thermostats have an average of ten years before they need to be replaced. If your thermostat sends incorrect information to your AC, it will make your air conditioner look like the bad guy even when it isn’t.

At that point, you can upgrade your thermostat to a smart or Wi-Fi version. These help you save money by learning your heating and cooling habits and making everything more accessible. If you simply want to repair your current thermostat, that’s okay too.

Blower Motor Issues

Blower motors tend to last for 10-15 years, or the average lifespan of an HVAC system. These aren’t cheap to replace, but without them, there’s no forced air coming through your vents. Your blower motor should last for the long haul, but it’s always a good idea to keep a keen eye on blower motor failure.

Pulling Too Much Power

Your air conditioner may pull more power than needed (which results in tripping the circuit breaker or blowing a fuse) if it has poor airflow.

Your filters need to be changed out every 1-3 months or so, and your ducts should be cleaned every now and again to reduce air resistance as well. During maintenance, your technician will be able to tune up the entire system and clear away debris to hopefully prevent power problems in the future.

It’s Time for AC Repairs

Repairs should never wait. The longer your HVAC unit goes without repair, the more severe problems will become (and they can cause additional problems that weren’t there to start). If your budget is what’s stopping you, we offer ways to finance your AC repairs.
